Bone Marrow Transplant In India

In a medical process called a bone marrow transplant, healthy cells from another person are used to replace the person's own bone marrow. The replacement cells can come from either the patient's own body or from a donor. A bone marrow transplant in India is also called a stem cell transplant or a hematopoietic stem cell transplant.

Various categories of transplants

There are a number of categoriesof bone marrow transplants. Some of these are mentioned below:
  • Autologous transplant
An autologous transplant uses stem cells harvested from the recipient's own body. In rare circumstances, radiation therapy or chemotherapy administered at excessive doses or in a harsh manner is utilized to treat cancer. This sort of treatment could harm the stem cells in your body and immune system. As a result, before beginning cancer treatment, medical personnel remove stem cells from a patient's bone marrow or blood. You body and your immune system’s ability to fight infection and generate blood cells will be restored once the chemotherapy treatment is complete and your stem cells have been returned to your body. This procedure is also known as aautotransplant or stem cell rescue.
  • Allogenic transplant
Allogenic transplants use stem cells obtained from a donor, who is a person other than the recipient. The stem cells of the donor aretransplanted into the recipient's body after the recipient has undergone radiation therapy and/or chemotherapy. An ALLO transplant is another name for this procedure. During an ALLO transplant, the graft fights against the cancer cells in a significant number of patients. At this point, any cancer cells still therein the body are found by the newly formed stem cells and killed. This is a big reason why ALLO transplants really work as a treatment for cancer.
  • The umbilical cord blood is extracted and transplanted
The stem cells transplanted in this method are those harvested from the blood of the umbilical cord. Post birth, the newborn does not require it any longer. Cancer treatment facilities all around the plant use this blood.
  • Both parent-child transplants and mismatched haplotype transplants are performed
It is possible that cells from a patient's parent, child, brother, or sister will not be an exact match for the patient's HLA type. Nonethelessthere is a 50% chance that they will be. More and more commonly, doctors are doing these kinds of transplants in an effort to broaden the scope of transplantation by way ofa viable cancer treatment.

What is the recovery process?

A transplant of bone marrow or stem cells requires a significant amount of time for recovery. You will eventually make the transition to a schedule of regular medical visits over the upcoming years as your long-term recovery makes progress. This will occur at some point in the future. Some things to keep in mind after Bone Marrow Transplant in India:
  • During the beginning stages of the patient's recovery, it is essential to remain vigilant for any signs of infection. Your immune system will be damaged further by the severe chemotherapy and radiotherapy that you get prior to your transplant. This ensures that your body will embrace the transplantation without mounting an immune response against the donor stem cells. After a transplant, it will be some time before your immune system is fully functional again.
  • Even if you take all the necessary precautions, it is likely that you might get an infection after having a bone marrow transplant. Your physician will carefully watch for any indications that you may be developing an infection.
  • Doctors will perform regular blood tests and other examinations on you in order to evaluate the way in which your body and immune system react to the donor cells. You might also receive blood transfusions with the help of a catheter that's in your arm.

What should be your dietary restrictions?

You may need to change your diet after a bone marrow transplant to stay healthy and avoid gaining too much weight. Your nutrition specialist will help you make a healthy eating plan that fits your needs and fits in with your lifestyle. Your dietitian can also suggest foods that can help with treatments such as chemotherapy and radiation, like feeling sick. Some of the things your dietitian may tell you are:
  • Follow food safety rules to avoid getting sick from food.
  • Eating a wide range of healthy foods as recommended by your dietician.
  • Limiting salt intake
  • Putting limits on alcohol
After a bone marrow transplant in India, regular physical activity helps you keep your weight under control, strengthen your bones, boost your endurance, build muscle, and reduce the risk of heart disease. As your health improves, you will be able to gradually resume your previous level of physical activity. After a transplant, it's even more important to take steps to avoid getting cancer. Don't smoke. Apply sunscreen if you're outside, and make sure to get cancer checks your doctor suggests. A transplant of bone marrow has the potential to cure certain diseases while putting others into remission. Your specific condition will determine the specific goals of a bone marrow transplant. Still, in general, they will include extending your life, increasing your quality of life, managing or curing your disease, and controlling or treating your disease. It can be disheartening when significant obstacles present themselves during the transplant procedure. However, it can be helpful to keep in mind that there are a lot of survivors who also went through some very challenging days during the transplant process. Still, in the end, they were able to have successful transplants and are now living normal lives with a high quality of life. Keeping this in mind can be helpful in certain situations.
