How to get a kidney donor?
In case your doctor feels that a kidney transplant is the only way out for you, the physician will assist you in getting in touch with a local hospital or a transplant center that deals in organ transplants. You will need to go through various x-rays, exams, and scans before going through the final transplant process. Getting a healthy kidney is tough, and there are primarily two ways you can achieve it. You may either choose to find a living donor, wherein you know someone who will be willing to give you the kidney. The second option is to get a kidney from a deceased kidney donor. When to go for a kidney transplant?
A kidney transplant is usually done in case of kidney failure instead of a lifetime for dialysis. It would treat an end-stage renal disease or chronic kidney disease. A kidney transplant will, in turn, give you a better quality of life, lower your death risk and implement lesser dietary restrictions on you. For some people who have been suffering from heart disease, are aged, and have a recently treated cancer, it is recommended to refrain yourself from a kidney transplant. Also, if you have suffered from dementia or gone through alcohol or drug abuse, a kidney transplant can threaten your life and be severely risky. Nonetheless, if both of your kidneys fail to work, a kidney transplant could be the only option available for you!How long does a kidney transplant process take?
A kidney transplant in India shall usually take up to 3 hours. But it can go up to 5 hours as well. How is the kidney transplant done?
You will be treated with anesthesia all throughout the process so that you remain asleep while the surgery is done. The surgeon will further make an opening in your abdomen area right above the groin. Your kidneys will be removed in case you have pain, or they are infected. The donor's kidneys, on the other hand, will be put in. The blood vessels of the kidneys will be attached to your body. And the ureter will be connected to your urinary bladder for excretion. Further, a drain will be put into your abdomen to remove the excess fluids from your kidney, the ones that are built up in your body during the surgery. On the contrary, the surgeon will put a tiny tube known as the 'stent' into your ureter, which would help you pee. The stent will then be removed post 6 to 12 weeks after the procedure is completed. How long does it take to recover after a kidney transplant?
After the kidney transplant, you will be all fit to go around and start walking just after the day of your surgery. Most people usually stay in the clinic for even lesser than 3-4 days. It will take approximately 2 weeks for you to start feeling better. Also, you will be eligible to lift heavy objects or drive or ride post a month to be on a safer side. It's better if you can take leave from your week for a month or two. You may need to take a special medicine, as advised by the physician, to ensure that your body isn't rejecting the donor's kidney. Initially, you should visit the doctor at least twice or thrice a week to check if your body is actually healing the way it should! Going ahead, you can make the visit schedule less frequent!Tips to note if you have undergone a kidney transplant
- If you actually wish to stay healthy, quit smoking and drinking!
- Talk to a dietitian to count on tips for healthy meal planning.
- Drink more liquids than usual if you are on dialysis.
- Eat more fruits and veggies.
- Eat foods that will keep your blood pressure on the lower side.
- Check that your blood sugar level is stable.

In case your body isn't able to accept the kidney received from the donor, you might have the following side effects:- Vomiting
- Pain
- Nausea
- Fever
- Production of lesser urine
